Welcome Message

Chairman: Dr. Toshiya Koitabashi (Tokyo Dental College Ichikawa General Hospital)

Chairman

Dr. Toshiya Koitabashi

Tokyo Dental College Ichikawa General Hospital

I am Toshiya Koitabashi from Department of Anesthesiology, Tokyo Dental College Ichikawa General Hospital. I am deeply honored to have been appointed as the Chairman of the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists (JSA). To mark the opening of the JSA annual meeting, I would like to express my sincere greetings.
As we face an aging society with fewer children, the number of cases of general anesthesia in surgery, which is the main anesthetic practice, is expected to gradually decrease, although the number may increase to maximum in 2025, when all baby boomers become older adults aged 75 or over. On the other hand, some anesthesiologists are actively working in so-called subspecialty areas other than surgical anesthesia, taking advantage of the knowledge and skills necessary for general anesthesia management, such as analgesia and sedation. When considering the future state of anesthetics, we must not ignore expectations from doctors in other fields for our assignments outside the operating room. The services of anesthesiologists who can move out of the frame of the operating room will inevitably be required in the future.
I decided that the theme of this JSA annual meeting would be “Let's take a novel step forward listening to the voices of the era.” I have prepared opportunities to listen to specialists as they discuss the attractiveness of future prospects in the fields of emergency care, pain clinics, and special anesthetic areas, such as obstetric, cardiovascular, respiratory, surgical, and pediatric anesthesia, in addition to intensive and palliative care, which are subspecialties certified by the Japanese Medical Specialty Board. We focus on plans to provide the latest knowledge relevant to each area. When we consider future anesthetic care, learning more skills for anesthesiologists is essential. I hope that this annual meeting will be the trigger for many participants.
I asked Mr. Akira Ikegami to give a special lecture. Dr. Wayne Morriss, the president of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), will deliver the invited lecture. Both lecturers will talk about their expectations for anesthesiologists. In addition, measures to ensure safety in the aviation industry are useful references for medical safety. I will also provide an opportunity to hear from a person who miraculously survived the jumbo jet crash in 1985. AI and Chat GPT, which are recent topics of interest, have the power to change the times drastically. Making full use of these technologies may be the first step toward a new era. We also plan to deliver a lecture on AI and Chat GPT in the area of anesthesia.
For this JSA annual meeting, in addition to the on-site presentations in Kobe from June 5 to 7, 2025, the contents will be distributed on demand for about one month. How about reviewing your steps thus far to consider your next step towards the direction you would like to go forward?
We sincerely thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in making this JSA annual meeting productive.
